Grade 1: 0.4–0.8 mm — the main filtration layer at the top of the bed, removing around 95% of particles down to about 1 micron.
Why AFM instead of sand: it filters much finer (roughly 1 micron, against about 20 microns for sand), so the water is clearer and healthier. The activated glass surface resists bacteria and biofilm and never clumps or channels, so it keeps performing consistently.
It also cuts backwash water and chlorine use, and lasts well over ten years. Made from recycled glass and independently certified to NSF and European drinking-water standards.
A full fill usually uses all three grades — Grade 3 at the bottom over the laterals, Grade 2 in the middle, and Grade 1 as the main top layer. AFM weighs about 15% less than the sand it replaces.
